Waiting to be Invited (2001)
ACT is proud to present a moving, funny, and warmly human first play by a rapidly emerging playwright. Based on real-life experiences of Shephard-Massat's grandmother, Waiting to be Invited tells the story of four unlikely heroes who test the Supreme Court desegregation rulings by meeting at a "whites only" lunch counter in 1960s Atlanta. As these ordinary working-class women confront the seriousness of their momentous lunch, they find the courage to rise above their fears, and, in doing the extraordinary, discover that the most formidable barriers to freedom lie within their own hearts.
